Skype has recently released an app for Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld game console. It allows voice and video chat, using the Vita’s front and rear facing cameras. It also runs in the background which enables users to receive  calls while playing games. Just like how we’re used to Skype’s service, it  allows for calls to other Skype users for free, or to landline and mobile phones through the use of your Skype credit.

As of Wednesday April 25, the app is available for free download from Sony’s online PlayStation Store for the U.S. and it will be available by Thursday April 26 for Europe and Asia.

Sony’s PlayStation Vita, was launched earlier this year and Tech Today was selected as one of the worldwide shows to cover the Middle East launch event in Dubai. Vita is a dedicated gaming console featuring applications that appeal to more general users such as maps, video recording and of course Skype.

PS Vita has a lot of negative points as to the Proprietary OS it uses and the limitation of partnerships with third party software houses.
One example is that till today it does not support YouTube, and free games are very very limited to download. My son is thinking of selling his PS Vita and get other gaming product. Sony should do something to the unavailablability of free games on PS Vita and other third party applications. Thanks.
